PTO shaft U-joints can be lubricated to ensure smooth operation and prolong their lifespan. Here's how to lubricate them:
Identify Lubrication Points: Locate the grease fittings or zerks on the PTO shaft U-joint. These are typically small metal nipples or fittings on the U-joint body or caps.
Clean the Fittings: Before lubricating, wipe the grease fittings clean of any dirt, debris, or old grease using a rag or brush. This prevents contaminants from entering the joint.
Select the Correct Grease: Choose a high-quality grease suitable for the application and compatible with the U-joint material. Lithium-based greases are commonly used for general-purpose lubrication.
Grease the U-joint: Attach a grease gun to the grease fitting and pump grease into the joint until fresh grease begins to ooze out from the seals. Be careful not to over-grease, as this can cause excessive pressure and damage the seals.
Rotate the Shaft: After greasing, manually rotate the PTO shaft to distribute the grease evenly throughout the U-joint. This ensures that all internal components are properly lubricated.
Inspect for Proper Lubrication: After lubricating, visually inspect the U-joint to ensure that grease is evenly distributed and there are no signs of excess or insufficient lubrication.
